There was this great song by Joe Dassin. (It says he's burried in Hollywood. Who knew?) My mother used to love him. Probably still does. We don't talk music much. It's odd because there are some gems in my parents music collection, it's just they seem to have lost their minds musically. (How much Celine does any record collection really need.) I'd link him to YouTube but for the most part I like my readers.
I have this earworm: "Moi, je suis presque bien. La vie continue... elle va come elle vient." It's a Joe Dassin tune. I'm not exactly sure which song it comes from but I suspect that it's from Le Jardin du Luxembourg. Then "I can go... with the flow..." (Odd combo... I have an odd mind.)
I am a bit void of content and I was all set to write about my musical glut of late. And how I didn't think that there was "any good about music in 2008." But I don't really think it's true. I think I am in a mood. There are definitely a few gems to be had this year.
For my fellow Springsteen and RATM lovers, Ghost of Tom Joad with Tom Morello rocked my socks off this year. The Boy loves loves this song. "Mom what does 'A hole in your belly, and a gun in your hand.' mean?" It's one of my great joys to talk about music with The Boy.
We saw Springteen a bunch of times with Magic. Highlight was definitely the behind the stage seats in Boston, Hamilton was also incredible. (I think we may be striking Ottawa off the concert scene for good. Although the Ottawa show was pretty magical with a few of the members of Arcade Fire doing Keep the Car Running and State Trooper. (You know you've seen a tour a lot when you're not sure if it's four or five times.) I understood Springsteen this year. Better late than never.
Not to leave Pearl Jam out, because, I am saving my pennies for the collector set. The Who Tribute version of Love Reign O'er Me, made me love them all over again. Sigh. (I swear you could see the wave of music hit us when they played that night in Camden. In this case the wave was red -- yes the wave of music has a colour. Garden's in Toronto was a cool blue.)
Other gems:
On our road trip to St. John's we stopped at Fred's Record Store. Fred suggested Hey Rosetta's album Into Your Lungs. (It has also been featured on the R3-30.) It's a lovely piece of work and one I very much enjoyed. Also embedded with one of the most memorable trips. Ever. Album is really good though. Go download it now.
For the French music fans out there, Karkwa's Le volume du vent is a solid piece of work that I very much enjoyed. I love love love this guy's voice. (Check out Oublie Moi.)
Still it wasn't all deep heavy philosophical music. Fun singles to check out. I have developed this thing for slightly hokey things this year.
- Spinster's Almanac: Christine Fellows (I keep in a match box in the pocket of my coat.)
- Run (I'm a natural disaster): Gnarls Barkley (oh hush, I love this.)
- When you gonna Flower: Hawkesley Workman. This is so silly it had to make the list. Definitely the whole Loverboy vibe... hysterical... you just don't want to turn it off.
- Emergency Street, Hilotrons. (Love this little band -- Devo minus the whips.)
- L'ours, Tricot Machine. (sick sick twisted song -- the video is very litteral. I really need to pick up the rest of this album.)
Land of Talk, Some are Lakes and Cat Power's eMusic Session EP. (I haven't listen to either yet.) Big fan of Land of Talk's Young Bridge.
So far 2009 is looking promising...
